Some people are lucky but most are not. This is what I observe when it comes to being immune to poison ivy. According to the experts, about 15% – 30% of people have a natural immunity to poison ivy.
Immunity against poison ivy rash?
I am lucky that I am one of those people who are immune to poison ivy rash. However, I am not really sure if my immunity is natural because when I was a lot younger, I easily get poison ivy rash. The worst rash I had was when I was 7 years old, I was hospitalized because of severe rashes. My back is covered with red blistering spot and the itchiness is intolerable. Good thing I was discharged after spending one night at the hospital.
When I already a teenager, I was again poisoned twice by poison ivy but the inflammatory reaction onto my skin was not the same when I was still 7 years old. Some would say that this is because I was exposed to the plant many times and my immune cells have become resistant to the urushiol over the course of time.
However, this may not be the case for the others. It is still best to stay away from poison ivy plants at all cost. Remember, prevention is always better than cure.
